Music and Poetry

I recently had a chance to talk on KPBX about Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” and poetry with Verne Windham (classical music expert) and Donivan Johnson (composer and musicologist).  bachThe conversation ranged over the relationship between poetry and music and offered some great insight (from Donivan and Verne!) about how Bach’s famous piece of music works.  I also read from my long poem, “Eclipse,” which attempts to render the spirit of The Variations into poetry.  Add more insight from Verne Windham and Johnson about the many ways that the piece has been arranged (for harpsichord, piano, and strings), a few samples from the music, and a couple of other poems by Roethke and Bishop, and I think that it makes for a good discussion.  Enjoy!
